Whether this is your first time hiking or your fiftieth, Lombard, Illinois has quality hiking trails. So get motivated and get outside and reach your fitness goals. Lombard is home to gorgeous parks and hiking in suburban settings. We’ll cover simple trails as well as more complicated ones. All of them are easy to reach from City View at the Highlands luxury apartments.
The Great Western Trail
This is a really nice starter-trail for first-time hikers. Open all year long, this point-to-point trail in Lombard is nearly 12 miles long. Pedestrian traffic is moderate and leashed dogs are always welcome, so bring Fido out too! The Great Western Trail has good reviews on AllTrails.com, though the trail does cross street traffic several times.
The trail itself is well maintained, and there are activity options throughout the 11.8 miles. It’s not known for exceptional views, but there is very little change in elevation and no steep hills or dramatic turns, making it ideal for any level hiker. Skaters and cyclers are welcome!
Churchill Woods Forest Preserve
The Churchill Woods Forest Preserve is home to several explorable trails. Per the Preserve’s website, “You can walk, jog, bike, cross-country ski or ride horseback on the 0.6-mile Regional Trail, which connects to the Great Western Trail.” Bikes, horses, and dogs must stay on the limestone portion of the trail which runs through the preserve.
These trails range from mild to moderate, and even difficult for hikers, so wear good hiking boots.
Just a quick jaunt away from our luxury apartments, Lyman Woods in Downers Grove has a reputation for stunningly beautiful trails. The hiking is mild to moderate in difficulty, and you can even purchase local honey!Back to all posts
