Believe it or not, cookies, as we know them today, were not invented to be eaten. Instead, cooks would bake a small dollop of batter as a way to see if the oven was hot enough. Now, it’s one of the best desserts out there. If you would like to enjoy this sweet treat at home, several bakeries around our Lombard apartments offer pickup.
A local tradition since 1953, Kirschbaum’s Bakery is a family-owned business where customers are known by name. The bakery began from humble beginnings, and founders Lester and Cele Kirschbaum had no idea that the shop would remain open for generations. Today, their kids and grandkids carry on their tradition of offering fresh treats at reasonable prices. Cookies include molasses, English toffee, and molasses. Order online for easy pickup.
Lezza has brought a taste of Italy to Elmhurst since 1905. It started with a spumoni recipe (ice cream with different flavors, nuts, and fruit) that has been in the Lezza family for more than a century. Today, the bakery is run by the third generation. Customers also find an array of other sweets, including lemon ricotta cookies. Made from a decades-old recipe, they feature fresh lemon and real ricotta and are topped with a sweet lemon glaze.
At the Cookie Garden, the treats are “large, rich, and delicious.” Sample the new stuffed cookie. Recently featured in The Daily Herald, it features two gourmet cookies with a filling you won’t soon forget. Flavors include apple pie, peanut butter, and oatmeal chocolate chip.
